Kusal Mendis Set to Replace Jos Buttler in Gujarat Titans Squad Before Playoffs

A Key Change Ahead of the Playoffs

With the IPL 2025 Playoffs just around the corner, Gujarat Titans are likely to make a major change in their squad. Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis is set to step in as a replacement for England’s Jos Buttler, who will be leaving early due to international commitments.

Why Buttler Is Leaving

The IPL’s revised schedule now overlaps with England’s limited-overs series against the West Indies, starting May 29 in Edgbaston—the same day as Qualifier 1 in the IPL Playoffs. With Jos Buttler selected in England’s squad, he will miss the crucial knockout stage of the IPL.

Kusal Mendis to Join the Titans

As per reports from NewsWire and ESPNcricinfoKusal Mendis will join Gujarat Titans as a temporary replacement. He is expected to feature directly in the playing XI due to the team’s limited wicket-keeping options. The only other choice available is the uncapped Anuj Rawat.

Mendis will also be teaming up with his national teammate Dasun Shanaka in the GT camp.

Mendis Brings Experience and Firepower

Kusal Mendis comes in with strong recent form. He played in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) earlier this year, scoring 143 runs at a strike rate of over 168 for the Quetta Gladiators.

The 30-year-old has a solid T20 record with 4700+ runs, including 2 centuries and 32 half-centuries. Despite his experience, this will be his first-ever IPL stint.

Titans Eyeing Playoffs with Strong Momentum

Currently, Gujarat Titans sit at the top of the table with 16 points from 11 matches. They need just one more win to officially qualify for the Playoffs.

Jos Buttler has been in brilliant form, playing at No. 3 and scoring 500 runs at an average of 71.43. He is expected to play the final three league-stage matches before flying out for international duty.

Important Note on Replacement Rules

Due to the IPL’s updated replacement policy, Gujarat Titans cannot retain Mendis for the next season, as he’s being signed as a short-term replacement.

Final Thoughts

Gujarat Titans will surely miss Buttler during the Playoffs, but Mendis brings solid international experience and a sharp batting style that could help keep their winning momentum alive. All eyes will be on how he performs in his IPL debut and whether he can fill the big shoes left behind.
