Following the decision made by the Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan to bowl first, South Africa developed their innings with a dominant 114 run second-wicket partnership between Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton. Rickelton, in just 23 balls, made a half century and De Kock followed soon after.

Rashid retaliated in a fashionable manner, and dismissed both set batters in the same over but by then ground work was already laid for a competitive total.

Afghanistan burst off the blocks, in four overs gaining 50 with no casualties. Rahmanullah Gurbaz was at his aggressive best, making a fluent 84 out of 42 balls. The effort of Azmatullah Omarzai (22) and Rashid Khan (20) saw to it that the chase remained alive till late in the innings.

A pronounced final over, which included two no-balls of Kagiso Rabada, alternated momentum before Fazalhaq Farooqi was run out trying to take a second run, and the match was tied.

The first super over match reached a tie at 17 apiece, with Tristan Stubbs striking a six on the final ball to keep South Africa alive. In the second superover, 16 in four balls by David Miller powered South Africa to 23 without any wickets.

Afghanistan retaliated strongly once more, but the two wickets of Keshav Maharaj, including one off the last delivery, gave a dramatic victory by 4 runs to South Africa.

What Does This Result Mean?

It was only the third men's T20 international that was determined by several super overs. South Africa boosted their standing in Group D and Afghanistan is virtually out of the knockout stage following defeats in consecutive matches.

Nevertheless, it was a match of bravery, havoc and poise. Such a game will be remembered long after the tournament ends.
